What CAT ET Does
Caterpillar Electronic Technician, usually called CAT ET, communicates with electronically controlled Caterpillar engines and machines. Technicians use it to read active and logged diagnostic codes, monitor parameters, run supported diagnostic tests and calibrations, review ECM configuration and perform supported WinFLASH operations.
To communicate with the equipment, CAT ET needs compatible hardware such as a Caterpillar Communication Adapter III and the correct cable for the machine. The adapter is separate from the software.
What CAT SIS Does
CAT SIS is the service-information side of the workflow. It helps a technician find disassembly and assembly procedures, specifications, parts information and other references needed after CAT ET identifies the system or fault that requires attention.
CAT SIS does not replace CAT ET because it does not perform live diagnostics. CAT ET shows what the ECM and sensors are reporting; SIS helps explain the correct inspection and repair process.
Where Caterpillar Flash Files Fit
Flash files contain ECM software used during supported programming or update procedures. CAT ET provides the WinFLASH function that writes the correct file to a supported ECM. Always confirm the file, engine serial number and applicable service information before programming.
Which Caterpillar Software Do You Need?
- Choose CAT ET when you need fault codes, live data, tests, calibrations or ECM communication.
- Choose CAT SIS when you need repair procedures, specifications or parts and service information.
- Use both when you want a complete diagnostic-to-repair workflow.
- Add flash files only when your work includes supported ECM programming and you can verify the correct file.
