How to Force a DPF Regeneration on Case IH & New Holland (with CNH EST)

Your Case IH or New Holland tractor drops into limp mode with a flashing DPF light, right in the middle of the season. Power is cut, and the machine is telling you the diesel particulate filter is too full of soot to keep going. The fix is a parked (forced) regeneration — and with the right tool, you can do it yourself in the shed instead of waiting days for a dealer. Here's how it works on CNH equipment, what the machine needs before it will start, and the safety points that matter.

Why the tractor goes into limp mode

The DPF traps soot from the engine's exhaust. Normally the machine burns that soot off on its own during hard work (passive regen) or automatically (active regen). But if the machine does a lot of light work, idling or short runs, the exhaust never gets hot enough, and soot builds up faster than it clears. When the soot load crosses a safe threshold, the ECU cuts power to protect the engine and turbo from excessive exhaust backpressure — that's limp mode. A flashing regen light plus reduced power is the classic sign the DPF needs a forced burn.

One key check first: a DPF light on its own usually means "soot high, regen needed." A DPF light plus a check-engine light often means a fault (a sensor, EGR or turbo problem) is blocking regeneration — in which case forcing a regen won't work until the fault is fixed. This is exactly why you scan the machine first.

Soot vs. ash — check before you burn

A forced regen only clears soot (combustible carbon). It does not clear ash (the incombustible residue from oil and additives that builds up slowly over thousands of hours). A proper diagnostic scan tells you which you're dealing with. If the filter has crossed its permanent ash threshold, no amount of forced regens will help — it needs physical cleaning or replacement. A service tool can reset the soot counter once if the filter is still below that ash threshold; past it, cleaning is required.

How to force a parked regen on Case IH / New Holland

There are two common paths on CNH equipment, depending on the machine.

1. From the in-cab display (AFS Pro machines)

Many Case IH tractors — Farmall, Maxxum, Puma, Magnum — with the AFS Pro 700 or 1200 display can start a stationary regen from the cab. The general path is the Toolbox (wrench icon) → Engine tab → Regeneration → Stationary Regen. The display then lists the preconditions the machine requires, and highlights any unmet ones in red. New Holland machines with an IntelliView display follow a similar menu-driven path. Older compact machines without a digital display often use a dedicated cab-mounted regen switch instead — check the operator manual for its location.

2. From CNH EST (the dealer-level tool)

For a full forced regen — especially on a machine that's already derated, or when you also need to read the fault codes behind the problem — the dealer approach is CNH EST. This is the same laptop-based tool the dealer plugs in. It lets you confirm the soot vs. ash load, read any faults that might block the regen, command the parked regeneration, and watch live exhaust temperatures to confirm the burn is actually happening. If the in-cab option isn't available or won't proceed, EST is how you get it done.

The preconditions the machine will require

A CNH machine won't start a parked regen until it's in a safe state. Typical preconditions include:

  • Parking brake on
  • PTO off
  • Hydraulics in neutral
  • Coolant temperature above a minimum (often around 70°C) so the engine can reach burn temperature
  • Sufficient fuel and no active faults that would abort the cycle

Once the preconditions are met and you confirm, the engine ramps up (commonly to around 1,400 RPM on many CNH machines) and begins raising exhaust temperature. The DPF lamp typically changes from solid amber to flashing green during the regen, and goes solid green or off when it's complete. Expect the cycle to take roughly 20–45 minutes depending on soot load.

Safety — this is a high-temperature process

A forced regen is not something to do casually. During the burn, the DPF and exhaust reach extreme temperatures — the filter can exceed 1,100°F (600–700°C), hot enough to ignite flammable material. Follow these rules:

  • Park outdoors on a hard, non-combustible surface, away from anything flammable (dry grass, fuel, buildings)
  • Keep the exhaust outlet clear — nothing above or near the stack
  • Do not walk away and do not interrupt the cycle. Shutting the engine off mid-regen stops the soot oxidizing but leaves the filter scalding hot, which can warp the substrate and leave unburned soot in uneven patterns — potentially damaging the DPF
  • Always follow the on-screen prompts and the operator manual for your specific model

Fix the cause, not just the symptom

If your machine needs forced regens often, that's a signal, not a solution. Frequent regens usually trace back to a light-duty/idle work pattern, a failing sensor (like an EGT or differential-pressure sensor), a turbo issue, or an EGR problem. A telltale case: turbo oil leaks can contaminate the DPF and prevent proper regeneration. Use EST to read the codes and live data to find the real cause — otherwise you'll be back forcing another regen next week.

Bottom line

A parked regeneration is the legitimate way to clear a soot-clogged DPF and get your Case or New Holland machine out of limp mode — and with CNH EST you can do it yourself instead of waiting on the dealer. Just scan first (to rule out ash and blocking faults), meet the preconditions, respect the heat, and let the cycle finish. Then chase the root cause so it doesn't keep happening.
