How Long Does a DPF Regen Take? Parked, Active & Forced Regen Explained

If your dash regen light is on and you're wondering how long you'll be parked, here's the short version — and then the detail every diesel tech and owner-operator should know. Understanding the three types of DPF regeneration is the difference between a quick reset and a plugged filter that puts the truck in a derate.

Quick answer

A parked (forced) DPF regeneration takes about 20 to 60 minutes, most commonly around 30–45 minutes, depending on how loaded the filter is, engine temperature and manufacturer. Active regens happen automatically while driving and take roughly 20–40 minutes. Passive regens happen continuously at highway temperature with no set duration. If a regen keeps failing to complete, that's a fault to diagnose — not something to keep re-running.

The three types of DPF regeneration

A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) traps soot from the exhaust. Regeneration is the process of burning that trapped soot off to keep the filter from clogging. There are three ways it happens:

1. Passive regeneration

Happens automatically during normal highway driving when exhaust temperatures are high enough (roughly 600 °C) to burn soot continuously. The driver never notices it and there's no fixed duration — it's ongoing. Trucks that run long highway miles rarely need anything more.

2. Active regeneration

When passive regen isn't enough (lots of idling, short trips, city driving), the ECM raises exhaust temperature — usually by injecting extra fuel — to burn the soot. This runs automatically while driving and typically takes 20–40 minutes. You may notice a change in engine note, higher idle or a puff of the cooling fan.

3. Parked / forced regeneration

When the soot load gets too high and active regens can't keep up, the truck requests a parked regen — the driver pulls over and initiates it, or a technician triggers a forced regen with diagnostic software. This takes about 20–60 minutes (commonly 30–45) and must run to completion.

What the regen light means

The DPF / regen lamp tells you the soot level is rising:

  • Solid regen light — soot is building; a parked regen is recommended soon.
  • Flashing regen light — soot is high; do a parked regen now or risk a derate.
  • Regen light + check engine / derate — the filter is critically loaded or a fault has blocked regen. This needs diagnostic software, not just another regen attempt.

Why a regen won't complete

If you keep starting regens that never finish, stop and diagnose. Common causes:

  • Faulty exhaust temperature or DPF pressure sensors
  • Failed or leaking 7th injector / hydrocarbon doser
  • EGR or turbo problems preventing correct exhaust temperature
  • An active fault code that disables regeneration entirely
  • A filter so loaded with soot or ash that it needs cleaning or replacement

How to run a forced regen

  1. Connect a compatible adapter and open the OEM diagnostic software for that engine (for example Cummins INSITE, Detroit DiagnosticLink or CAT ET).
  2. Confirm the preconditions the engine requires — coolant temperature, no disqualifying faults, park brake set, correct DEF level.
  3. Start the stationary / parked regen routine and let it run to completion — do not interrupt it.
  4. Once complete, clear any inactive codes and verify soot level has dropped.
